NURITH AVIV, DIRECTOR
For the PFFFF's 2023 edition, Nurith Aviv will present Signing (in conversation with Leon Hilton) and Yiddish (in conversation with Adi Ophir and Peter Szendy).
Nurith Aviv is a French filmmaker and director of photography, born in 1945 in Tel Aviv (then Mandatory Palestine). In her many documentary films, the topic of language is central to her personal and cinematographic exploration. Nurith Aviv was the first woman to be recognized as Director of Photography by the French National Center for Cinema and Animation (CNC) and has served as cinematographer for about a hundred feature and documentary films (with directors Agnès Varda, Amos Gitaï, René Allio, and Jacques Doillon, among others). She received the Édouard Glissant Prize in 2009 and the Grand Prix of the Académie Française in 2019 (nominated by Amin Maalouf). Retrospectives of her films were programmed in Paris at the Jeu de Paume (2008) and at the Centre Pompidou (2015).
